Cleaning Protocols
Data Center Routine Cleaning Protocols
Qualified cleaning personnel should regularly attend to floors, underfloor plenum, and other general surfaces.
Equipment must undergo regular inspections for dust, debris, and other contaminants before undergoing meticulous cleaning procedures.
SubFloor/Plenum Cleaning
When initiating the cleaning process in a data center, it’s essential for the staff to start with the sub-floor plenum area. This involves systematically removing and cleaning accessible floor panels one by one, using lint-free, microfiber, or electrostatic discharge (ESD) wipes. It’s crucial to exercise caution and avoid removing too many panels simultaneously to prevent issues such as floor instability and equipment overheating.
The cleaning procedure should proceed gradually, with the cleaning staff vacuuming all sub-floor areas and meticulously attending to the cabling and hardware of the data center equipment. Once all areas are thoroughly cleaned, the staff should carefully reinstall the floor panels in their correct positions and treat them with a staticide chemical solution to mitigate static electricity.
Floor Cleaning
Next, the floors should undergo cleaning using an ESD vacuum equipped with specialized HEPA filters, guaranteeing the elimination of even the tiniest particles of debris and dust from the data center. Subsequently, a comprehensive wipe-down with anti-static rags, a PVA mop, and a non-conductive staticide cleaner should be performed to eradicate all traces of dust, dirt, grime, and other contaminants. This process may need to be repeated as necessary. It’s crucial for the cleaning staff to exercise caution to minimize liquid usage, thereby averting seepage through the floorboards and potential damage to costly data center equipment.
Surface Cleaning
After ensuring the cleanliness of the floors, attention should be directed towards cleaning and vacuuming light fixtures, ledges, air conditioners, work surfaces, desks, and other accessible areas. Subsequently, all remaining surfaces including racks, storage cabinets, shelves, monitors, and more should be thoroughly cleaned. Tape racks and the surfaces of exterior hardware should also undergo careful vacuuming with HEPA filters, followed by wiping down the outlet and inlet grills of server cabinets using an anti-static cleaning solution.
Tape Library Cleaning
Personnel should undertake cleaning and vacuuming of all surfaces, including individual tape slots. It is preferable for cleaning teams to collaborate with an on-duty member of the Information System Development (ISD) department or another pertinent department to guarantee careful handling of all tapes and their proper return to designated locations after cleaning is finished.
